Beginning in September 2026, the North Carolina Healthcare Foundation (NCHF) will host a four-part, monthly webinar series designed to support perinatal leaders, clinicians, and quality professionals in strengthening safety, reliability, and outcomes in maternal–child health. Each session is intended to combine focused didactic content with interactive case-based learning and expert consultation to ensure practical application.

Speaker (Webinars 1-3)

Adriane Burgess PhD, RNC-OB, C-ONQS, CPHQ, C-EFM, FAWHONN - Principal at Adriane L. Burgess & Associates. Dr. Burgess has been a registered nurse for over 25 years working in a variety of maternal child health clinical settings, as well as an Assistant Professor of Nursing where she coordinated Maternal Child Nursing clinical and didactic courses. 

Currently, Dr. Burgess supports the statewide implementation of several perinatal-focused initiatives as the Senior Director of Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality at the Maryland Patient Safety Center. She also serves as the Director of OB/GYN Residency Research at WellSpan York Hospital and is active in the Association of Women’s Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) at the state and national levels. In addition to her work with AWHONN, Adriane also serves on the Medical Advisory Board of Count the Kicks.

Dr. Burgess holds certifications in Inpatient Obstetrics, Obstetric, Neonatal Quality and Safety, Childbirth Education, Healthcare Quality, and as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.  She has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles on maternal child health clinical quality and received several national awards for her innovative approaches to perinatal quality and safety, including the AWHONN Award for Excellence in Leadership. Adriane offers consultation to hospitals, healthcare systems and other organizations to promote the safe care of birthing people and their babies.

Sue Deaton, MSN, RN, FABC,has forty-four years of healthcare experience in clinical and non-clinical settings, and in corporate leadership positions with local, state, and national organizations. She is currently the Chief Engagement Office with Patient Centered Innovation, Inc. Her experience with federal grants (e.g. AHRQ, CDC, CMMS, HRSA) and privately-funded research programs covers areas such as patient safety, quality and performance improvement, high reliability, age friendly health care, diagnostic excellence, and patient-, family, and caregiver-centered care. Sue serves as faculty for the AHRQ/RAND IDEAS and Diagnostic Excellence Age Friendly Health Systems Seed Grant programs. Sue is passionate about initiatives that engage the voices of patients, caregivers, and communities at all levels of decision-making.
