This interactive workshop will feature an open panel discussion with local experts and will address common mental illness presentations, communication techniques, physical safety considerations, and unique NC challenges. Learning Objectives Describe factors influencing behavioral health care in NC and outline statewide improvement efforts. Improve knowledge of mental illness prevalence and stigma. Recognize signs, symptoms, and risk factors of common mental illnesses and addictions. Demonstrate techniques to effectively and empathically communicate with behavioral health patients in non-behavioral health settings while maintaining physical safety. Intended Audience This course is intended for participants who interact with patients and work predominantly in non-behavioral health settings, including the inpatient, ambulatory, or home care environments. Suggested attendees may include public safety officers, unit clerks/front desk personnel, PT, OT, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, technicians/technologists, medical assistants, nursing aides, sitters/attendants, case managers, patient navigators, and nurses.
