Advanced care planning involves patients making decisions about the medical care they will receive should they become unable to speak for themselves. Hospitals must comply with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations and standards, as well as the The Patient Self-Determination Act, which requires hospitals to inform patients of their rights under state law regarding medical care decisions.
